Subject: Locating Eliza Keys
Summary Of Known Information
Keys Family Background
Facing the hardships of famine, drought, and the Irish Rebellion of 1798, large numbers of Irish began immigrating to the United States and Canada. The Keys family were among those that immigrated to America arriving in 1804, settling in southwestern Pennsylvania common to many Irish and Scotch-Irish Immigrants.1 William Sr. and his family arrived in Washington Co. settling in the town of Beallsville.2 Historical accounts of the early days of Beallsville report Andrew Keys and his brother Thomas as tavern keepers. 3 The old graveyard in Beallsville is referred to as the Keys graveyard.4 A copy of a transcription and an abstract of the will of William Keys Sr. lists his wife and children as well as a description of his property.5 The Keys men were politically active in their communities and known to belong to the Democrat party.6
Looking for Eliza: Pennsylvania
Andrew Keys,7 son of William Keys and Christine Graham Keys 8 was born about 1787 in Ireland and married Eliza ( ) . Civil marriage records are not available for this area and time, therefore looking to the church of their know religion was a logical step. An inquiry to the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania did not generate a marriage record of Andrew and Eliza. It is possible that Andrew became acquainted with Eliza in another county as some Keys family members re-settled in Fayette Co., PA.9
Limited research in the Washington Co. land and court records did not provide any clues of the maiden name of Eliza. As this family migrates west, close neighbors of Andrew in Pennsylvania may show up living near this family later on. Other possible clues might be indicated by a careful study of the census.
Moving West, Indiana
Andrew Keys and family first appear in Pulaski Co. Indiana in 1839.10 Biographical sketches of the early settlers of Pulaski Co. refer to Mrs. Andrew Keys as a founding member of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Winamac.11 Examining the 1840 census in Pulaski Co. IN, 12 this family appears with the correct number of occupants and age profiles for Andrew, Eliza, and two known sons William G. and Thomas H. There is an unknown female also that appears with this family at this time that also appears with this family in earlier census.13
Evidence strongly suggests this family to be the same Keys family. A handwritten testimony of the accuracy of the census is observed by an affidavit attached to the census page in1840 Pulaski Co. IN. Andrew's signature appears at the bottom of his statement. 14 His signature closely matches an example from a court document in 1822 found in Washington Co. Pennsylvania also signed by Andrew.15
As the Keys family settles into their new home, Andrew takes advantage of the land being offered for sale by the United States government.16 A close examination of the county land records reveals land purchases and sales by Andrew. 17 Examination of additional land transactions unfortunately do not offer a clue to Eliza's maiden name.
In 1850, Andrew, now age 64 and Eliza 52, are living with son Thomas in neighboring Cass Co. IN. This document offers the first clue to where Eliza is born and a good estimation of her age.18 Eliza states she is born in Pennsylvania. The death information of Eliza is not yet known.
The towns of Winamac in Pulaski Co. and Logansport in Cass Co. are both situated near the county line. The close proximity of these two communities might offer some explanation to the Keys family living in one county,19 moving to the other and back again.20
Community Servants:
Soon after settling in their new community the Keys men become active in political life. Andrew was elected an Associated Judge in 1839, 21 holding many local and even national elections at his home.22 Thomas was elected Sheriff 23 and William is noted as enumerator of the federal census in 1860 in Winamac.24 William also serves on the school board,25 and holds a special meeting to erect a new school house at his home.26 In 1844 a group of local town's men submit a request to move a county road in Winamac. Each of the men sign the application, which lists Andrew, William, and Thomas.27 There are many recorded historical accounts of Andrew Keys and sons, however there is no mention of Eliza or her family. This leaves a question to the theory members of Eliza's family may have moved west along with the Keys.
After Andrew's Death
After the death of Andrew in 1857 28 Eliza is documented on the census living with son William G. in Pulaski Co.29 Several years later Eliza appears on a deed with sons William and Thomas selling land in Pulaski Co. Indiana stating she is a resident of Cass Co. Indiana. 30 In one transaction Eliza co-owns land in Pulaski Co. with son William and his wife Letitia Ann, and sells the land to son Thomas for $1.00. This raises some questions about the low price. It was a Quick Claim Deed. Was this land part of the dower rights of Eliza? Was there a similar sale to son William at one time? Researching these possibilities did not offer any new clues. The acquisition of this particular piece of land is still being researched.
By the time of this land sale in 1872 Eliza is about 74 years of age and probably living with William as the deed indicates. Looking for Eliza in 1870, the census shows her living in the household of William who is living in Pulaski Co. next door to Thomas. 31 Sometime between 1870 and 1872 Eliza along with William and Letitia move to Cass Co. In reviewing the 1880 census William is living in Cass Co. with his family and Thomas remains in Pulaski Co 32 Eliza is not present in either household.
Further research of land records in Pulaski and Cass Counties have not revealed new information about Eliza, but have revealed an additional piece of evidence adding to the confirmation this Keys family is the same Keys family of William Keys Sr. of Beallsville, PA. The middle name of son William was noted on a deed as Graham.33 William's middle name was given to him for the maiden name of his paternal grandmother.34
Andrew's Estate
It appears Andrew did not follow his father's example and prepare a will. Available probate records of the estate of Andrew Keys were viewed, noting sons William and Thomas as Administrators. There was no mention of Eliza. The estate sale of his personal property names a few items to be "Kept By the Family".35 The estate sale of the Andrew's personal property makes no direct mention of Eliza. Records of the real property held by Andrew are still being sought.
Andrew was interned at the Winamac Cemetery, commonly known as Dead Man's Hollow.36 A photo of his tombstone reveals a Masonic emblem 37 An inquiry was sent to the Grand Lodge of Indiana requesting information about Andrew and his family. A reply provides dates Andrew Keys entered Apprentice Degree, Fellow Craft Degree, Master Mason Degree in the Free Mason Lodge of Hope and Brownsville Lodge in Fayette Co. PA from 1816-1818. Affiliation with Lodge 60, Tipton Lodge 33 in Cass Co., IN from 1832 until his death in 1857. 38 Family information was not available.
A visit to the Winamac cemetery did locate the graves of Andrew Keys, and son Thomas H. Keys and offered an interesting curiosity. There is a space between their two headstones large enough for another grave. Physically prodding the space did not reveal a hidden marker.39 It appears Eliza is not buried where she should logically be. Contacting the county cemetery sexton and the county recorder did not uncover evidence of the death of Eliza or Elizabeth Keys in Pulaski Co.
A Look in Cass County
Did Eliza pass away at or near the home of son William in Cass Co? Locating death records for William Keys 40 and wife Letitia Ann41 were difficult. Letitia died first, quite young in 1888 at the age of 61. A nice obituary was written about Letitia in the local newspaper.42 William was living with his daughter Libby Gray according to his obituary43 and buried alongside of Letitia44 at the cemetery in Logansport.45 William and Letitia and some of their children are buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery. Cemetery records indicate a family plot was purchased about the time Letitia passed away. Research of the cemetery records did not reveal a grave for Eliza. Vital records in Cass County began in 1882 , Eliza or Elizabeth Keys is not listed.
When Eliza was not found in the cemetery records at Mt. Hope, a letter of inquiry was sent to Kroger's Funeral Home in Logansport. Records for William and Letitia were provided but nothing was found for Eliza.46
A closer look at the obituaries for both William and wife Letitia revealed services to be held at the Baptist church.47 Had Eliza changed her denomination and became active in the Baptist church in Cass Co? The historian to the oldest Baptist church in Logansport did not find her name listed in their archives.
A careful study of a map of the property of William revealed two small Baptist churches near by. One had a cemetery and so a request of the inventory was made. Eliza did not seem to be there.
Where is Eliza?
If Eliza died in Cass or Pulaski counties she must be somewhere. Looking at the web site for Kroger's Funeral home, it was noted they were established in 1875. A telephone call provided information to their predecessor. Chase and Miller were the owners of the Logansport funeral home before Kroger's. All their records were destroyed by fire. This attempt to locate records of Eliza's death again came up empty.
It is possible she died between 1872 when last noted on a deed, and 1875 when the funeral home records were archived. If that is the case, why is she not buried with the Keys family at the Mt. Hope cemetery, in Cass Co.?
Review of the family migration seemed a logical step. Had something been missed? A systematic study of the census following this family reveals a female child appearing in 1830 census living in the Andrew Keys home in PA.48 She remains with appropriate age progression in 1840. 49 This raises a question of a possible daughter. If Eliza had a daughter, why did she live with her two sons for many years after the death of her husband? Maybe her daughter was incapable of caring for her? Maybe she married and moved away? A careful look for a female Keys child married in the two counties where this family lived, reveals an Elizabeth Keys married to a Jacob Williams in Pulaski Co. in 1854.50 Possibly the right time if she was born between 1820 and 30, close to the birth years of William and Thomas. In seeking a young couple named Jacob and Elizabeth Williams, one was located about the correct age in Jackson Co. IN noted on the 1880 census. 51 If this is a female member of this family, why did she not appear on the 1850 census living with her parents? Lots of possibilities come to mind pondering this question. Further research about the identity of this Elizabeth Keys is currently underway.
Other Possibilities and Considerations
Did Eliza remarry? Searching the marriage records of both Cass and Pulaski counties did not locate a marriage for Eliza. Since Eliza is witnessed signing her married name of Keys on a deed in 1872, it is unlikely she re-married at this age of 73/4. Eliza is known to have lived for at least 15 years after the death of her husband, living with her two sons. However, Eliza may have moved to another county or state and remarried. Possibly moved away to live with a sibling or other family member. Did Eliza go to live with a Grandchild? Reviewing the 1880 census of the known grandchildren still living in the Winamac and Logansport area did not reveal a grandmother living in the household.52
Research at the Indiana State Archives did not indicate Eliza (Elizabeth) Keys was a patient at the state mental hospital from 1870-1900. There was an Old Folks Home in Winamac but it was not built until 1882. A bit too late for Eliza.
The town of Winamac is a small community. Is it possible a distant cousin family remains in the area? A letter of inquiry was sent and 5 months later an e-mail reply was received. Families named Morgan are descendants of son Thomas H. Unfortunately, to date, family information is not available through this source. 53
Few Conclusions and More Questions
Looking for Eliza sometimes feels as though there has been an exhaustive search. Eliza spent a good deal of her life in this area of Indiana. Why has she disappeared? Since her husband was a judge and son the sheriff it seems unlikely she is buried in an unmarked grave. In reviewing the land transactions of this family and the activities they employed, it appears they were not impoverished.
The state and county records began just after Eliza is last noted in the land records. Is it possible the recording of Eliza's death just slipped through the cracks? Is she in the grave in between Andrew and Thomas in Dead Man's Hallow? It seems to be the most likely answer. If so why is her grave not recorded? The beginning of recorded inventory of this cemetery may have been after her headstone disappeared.
Summary of Findings
The Andrew Keys family definitely left evidence of their active lives in Cass and Pulaski counties of Indiana. It is now known this family came from Pennsylvania, and the men died in Indiana.
Andrew was a farmer and a politically active man as were his sons William and Thomas. William had 6 children and Thomas and his wife Amy left 11. All three Keys men were land brokers of a sort. Records indicate they bought large parcels of land and split them for resale into smaller lots.
William, an active man with the school board and other areas of community service was not alone. His brother Thomas was town Sheriff and busy farming a large parcel of land for his large growing family.
The purpose of the research was also to locate a biographical sketch of Eliza Keys. Unfortunately Eliza Keys is only mentioned once in written history of the area and research of family recorded documents do not reveal many facts.
Research Plan
Continue to research the county court records in Washington Co. PA for any possible clues. There may be a hint already present in the current document, but without a maiden name, further research is not easy. A professional genealogical researcher has been hired to pursue this avenue.
The Church of Latter Day Saints has many microfilm records for Pulaski and Cass Co. IN. Continuing to view these records may bring forth new evidence. (see attached list)
One glimmer of hope still exists with the Morgan family in Winamac, IN. In early March 2003 five letters were written to the older siblings of Carolyn Morgan requesting their assistance. There is a possibility one of them may have a memory or an item, which hints clues to Eliza's name or whereabouts. A family bible has been located as well in Winamac. The current owner has it in a storage facility while work is being done on her home. Continue to pursue this possibility.
A further study of the census of the neighboring families of the Keys family in PA and in IN. reveals only one surname for consideration, John Pearson. Consideration will be made with respect to future research to this possibility. Additional research on the migration of John Pearson may be necessary.
Analyzing the Road Commissioner request document with all the townsmen's signatures, one must wonder if one of those neighbors was a brother, father or uncle to Eliza.
