The name of his widow, Elizabeth Curtis and her two sons were on the earliest records of town of Stratford. The father probably died soon after arriving at Stratford, or on the journey. The Ufford and Booth families had intermarried with the Cutrtiss before they left England. "
p. ix: "The Curtiss family was one of the most prominent among the first settlers of Stratford, and it was suggested naming of the town was after Stratford-on-Avon. Richard Booth was resident of Stratford-on-Avon. It is probable most of the early settlers were from Warwickshire. John Curtis I left England 1637 or 1639, and arrived Roxbury, Mass. His son John Curtis II came first to New England, father came last. Father was allotted 15 a. land on June 1, 1639, later moved to Wethersfield, Conn., died during move or soon after move."

"Elizabeth Curtiss first appeared on Stratford, Conn. Town Records in a list of property owners about 1650 with her two sons, John and William Curtiss. Her lot was near Rev. Adams Blakeman. She died June 1657 and her will was proved Nov. 4, 1658, at Fairfield, Conn."

"In 1639, he became a resident of Wethersfield, Hartford Co, Conn. In 1640, John Curtiss removed from Wethersfield to Stratford (Cupheag), Hartford Co, Conn. In May 1658, John Curtiss was made a freeman. On 29th Dec. 1675, John Curtiss was elected Town Treasure of Stratford. In 1678, John & William Curtiss were on town committee to build a new meetinghouse. John Curtiss serv'd as soldier in King Philip's War with rank of 2nd Lt. or Ensign. (II) "John, son of Elizabeth Curtis, was born in England in 1611. His name appeared among the original patentees of Stratford and on the list of property owners of 1650. He was made a freeman May 1658. He was a prominent citizen, and took part in settling the town. He served as a soldier in King Philip's War and attained the rank of Ensign. (2nd Lt.) and also held rank of sergeant. He was elected town treasurer Dec. 29, 1675."

John Curtis Sr. did not leave England until after 1637 when he paid a six-shilling tax called Ship Money. John Curtis Jr. left England c1635. He left Roxbury either in the fall or winter of 1639 for Wethersfield, Conn."

12. Ensign Joseph4 Curtiss (John3, John2) was born November 12, 1650 in Stratford, Fairfield Co, Conn., and died 1742 in Stratford, Conn.. He married Bethia Booth November 9, 1676 in Stratford, Fairfield Co, Conn., daughter of Richard Boothe and Elizabeth Hawley. Bethia Booth was born August 18, 1658 in Stratford, Conn. and died August 2, 1699, Stratford, Conn.
For many years, Joseph Curtiss was one of the most prominent citizens of Stratford, Conn. He held the position of town clerk for fifty successive years, from 1678-1728. In all the records during his tenure, he spelled his surname:"Curtiss." In 1698, he was elected a member of the Governor's Council, serving for 23 years. He was for several years a Judge of the County Court. He was appointed to several state committees of importance. In Oct. 1799, Capt. Joseph Curtiss, with the Deputy Governor and three others, was appointed to a Committee of War for Fairfield County. In 1710, with Hon. Nathan Gold and Peter Burr, he was appointed to locate the boundary line between the Colonies of New York and Connecticut. He was a lieutenant in the town band and was a representative from Stratford for a number of years. He was known as "the Worshipful Joseph Curtiss."

She was born February 18, 1686/87, died Oct 5, 1775, at age 91.
