WHALEN FAMILY of HARRISON Co KY
From early tax lists, the Whalen trio, two
Solomon Whalens and one Henry Whalen, owned land on Richland Creek
near where it emptied into the Main
Licking.
The town of Havilandsville sprang up eleven miles from this juncture. In the county
history can be found an account of Allen Whalen and Squire Whalen
(d. 1931) and their log cabin built 1835 in Havilandsville. Whalens' produce was carried to
Cincinnati on flaboats on the Main Licking. Near Squire Whalen's garden was the old log barn of
John Pollard built in 1835. In the old Richland Baptist Church cemetery
stands Robert S. Haviland's grave marker. Both the cemetery and the
monument have not stood up to passing years. James M. Hodson and his wife
Betsy were village merchants in Havilandsville. John and Henry Pollard
and Tapley A. Taylor Sr, Geroge, Ed, and Oscar Mattox lived in the
town and were prominent citizens. Towns where the Whalens resided: Sunrise,
Oddville, and Claysville. Henry Whalen who died aft. 1860 lived a long and
useful life. The kinship cluster around him on the 1830 Harrison County Census
consisted of allied families who married his sons and only daughter. Others were
Rev. War officers who claimed land in Kentucky after the war, like the Prices and
the Clevelands. Others were from counties in Virginia where the old colonial families had
originally settled: Loudoun, Lunenburg and Culpeper.
