JOHN SPAULDING of CAMPBELL COUNTY, KENTUCKY - SIXTH GENERATION
John Spoldon, as the name is spelled
on his handsome white marble tombstone in Alexandria Cemetery, was the third son of Aaron
& Hannah Herbert Spalding of Twelve-Mile, Ky. He was born December 26,
1810.[1] He grew up on the family farm near the Twelve-Mile Baptist Church
near the Ohio River. His brothers were William DeCoursey, James, Ephraim Dozier,
Henry E., and Aaron S. Spoldon. His sisters were Nancy Forrester,
wife of George W. Forrester and Rebecca Ann Gilliam, wife of Robison
Gilliam.[2]
John Spoldon, a confirmed Baptist like this Grandfather Rev. Josiah Herbert, became Deacon at Twelve-Mile Baptist Church 1844 to 1850.[3] He rode around the hills of northern Kentucky to attend meetings where sinning was always a hot topic! As Deacon, John Spoldon delivered congregational "warnings" for better behavior, and in the case of clear-cut recalcitrance, he delivered "dismissals."[4]
John married Elizabeth Strawn, daughter of John & Mary Strawn Jr. of Campbell Co, on November 16, 1831.[5] Twelve children were born to the marriage: seven sons and five daughters. Two of the children married into the Dawson family: Rebecca Ann Spaulding married Daniel Purnell Dawson on April 11, 1886; Antha Ann Spaulding married Charles Thornton Dawson on June 16, 1881. Their eldest daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Spaulding married Joseph Metzler November 3, 1864, just at the beginning of the Civil War. Two of the sons, Hiram & John Spaulding married sisters, Malinda & Martha Kees.[6]
The couple lived on a farm just northwest of
Alexandria, Ky, the county seat of Campbell. They attended the nearby Alexandria
Baptist Church. The family is listed on the 1850 Campbell Co, Ky, US Census: John
Spauldin, age 40, and his wife Elizabeth, age 38, with four sons, Aaron, John, Hiram and
William, and two daughters, Elizabeth & Milly in Alexandria Precinct. By 1860 census,
five more children were added: Dosier, George W., Rebecca Ann, Marion, and Antha Ann.[7]
John Spoldon lived until March 10, 1888.[8] He died at age 78, rich in love of family and honored by the community for his devoted service to the church. His grandson, Samuel B. Spaulding, kept his funeral statement: Frederick Spaulding purchased his grandfather's tombstone for $175, while Herbert Maddox furnished wire & labor for a fence around the plot: $25.[9] John Spaulding's tombstone inscribed with his surname spelled Spoldon. as it appeared in 1880 Campbell County Census: date of birth, Dec. 26. 1810 and date of death March 10, 1888. John Spoldon on the 1880 Campbell Co Ky. Census reported his father, Aaron Spalding, was born in Maryland, his mother, Hannah Herbert was born in Virginia, while he was born in Kentucky.

John and Mary Strawn Jr. of Campbell Co, Ky., Parents of Elizabeth Strawn Spaulding
Near Alexandria lived John & Mary Strawn, parents of Elizabeth Strawn Spaulding, wife of John Spaulding of Alexandria, Campbell Co Ky. Like so many Campbell Countians, the Strawns had come from Greene Co., Pa., down river into the Kentucky country.[10] John Strawn Jr. (1787-1857), father of Elizabeth Strawn Spaulding, was the son of John Strawn Sr. (1744-1808) and his wife Kezia Dennis. John Strawn Jr. was born 1787 in Greene Co Penn, he married Mary (unk), and died 1857 in Campbell Co Ky. John Strawn Sr. and his wife Kezia Dennis lived in Greene Co Penn. John Strawn Sr. was the son of Jacob (1717-1800) & Christiana Pursell Strawn of Bucks Co, Penn. Jacob Strawn was the son of Lancelot Strawn (d. 1720) and his wife Mary Buckman. The entire history of the Strawns of Pennsylvania can be followed generation by generation on "Genealogical Journeys in Time," by Bonnie Strawn-Miller under "Descendants of Lancelot Strawn."
Strawns have a long history going back five generations from Elizabeth Spaulding to the Gateway Ancestor, Lancelot Strawn of Upper Bucks Co, Pa.[11] Lancelot's wife, Mary Buckman, came to Penn's Colony on the ship Welcome with William Penn. The "Welcome" left England around May 29, 1682 [12] when the "baggage memoranda" for the Buckman family was written. Mary's mother and father, William & Sarah Buckman, Billinghurst, County Sussex English Quakers, are proven claimants for the Welcome Society by the memoranda.[13] Family tradition recounts that baby Mary sat on William Penn's lap holding a seashell as a playtoy on the trip across the Atlantic. The shell was a treasured heirloom well into the 19th Century.[14]
When the Strawns & Buckmans came ashore in PA, they lived temporarily in a cave on the banks of the Delaware. When they were able to purchase a town lot, they built a log home in the "hamlet" of Philadelphia. After a sojourn in New Jersey, the Strawn family moved to Strawntown, Bucks Co, Pa., in 1748-49. This rich county lying along the Delaware River has many historical towns and beautiful old stone farm houses. Jacob Strawn, only son of Lancelot & Mary Buckman Strawn, lived in Bucks County and his family worked one farm for many generations. The family home, "the Old Stone Mansion" built by Jacob Strawn Sr. in 1784, was still standing in 1995.[15]
