Kellam Family of Worcester County Maryland and Brown County Ohio
The Kellam family of
Brown County, Ohio, had its origins in Accomack County, Va., Worcester
and Somerset Counties, Maryland. Some family historians believe they trace their
patrimony from two brothers, John Kellam I and Richard
Kellam, who came to Northampton County Va. in 1635,
sailing from the port of London on the ship Primrose under Capt. Douglas. The
family are believed to have originated in Kelham, Nottinghamshire, England.
On July 27, 1635, the Primrose departed from Gravesend, England; Richard Kellam
was sixteen years old at the time. Upon arrival, Richard Kellam
was indentured to Nicholas Waddelowe, a Quaker farmer.
Constance E. Kellam of Valpariso, Indiana, formerly of Illinois, believed Richard Kellam was John Kellam II's uncle. Poll tax records show John Kellam II, son of John Kellam I, lived with Richard Kellam, the original settler, in Accomack Co. Va., several years after his entry into the colony. [1a & 1b ]
Richard Kellam, the Gateway Ancestor, amassed land by transporting settlers into the Virginia Colony. He claimed 50 acres per headright. In 1651 & 1653, Richard Kellam claimed headright land in Northampton Co., Va., on the Eastern Shore. Lord Berkeley gave him a large grant of 2400 acres. Richard Kellam was friend to Col. Edmund Scarborough, aide to Va. Gov. Berkeley. Richard married Sarah Ainsley whom he had brought from England in 1651. He fathered seven children: Edward, William, Richard the Younger, Ann Wallis, Sarah Curle, Rachel Lingo & Rose Garrettson. [2 & Appendix Will] In 1663, Richard Kellam traveled north to the Pocomoke River in Somerset Co, Md., which had just opened up for settlement, and purchased five hundred acres of "Kellam's Folly." [3]
A family history regarding the identity of John Kellam I & II can be found in two sources: (1) Constance E. Kellam who wrote Richard Kellam brought over John Kellam, a nephew from England, in1664, and (2) Woodrow T. Wilson who wrote John Kellam II was son of John Kellam I of Accomack Co Va. Since the Kellam family used the same given names over decades of settlement, it is sometimes difficult to separate the family lines. Where feasible, both historians will be used to cite documents based on assumption (a) John Kellam I was brother of Richard Kellam and (b) John Kellam II was nephew of Richard Kellam and son of John Kellam I.
Edward Kellam will be introduced
as son of Richard Kellam, the Gateway Ancestor. [see Edward Kellam's will in Appendix; West
Chester Patent]
In 1666, John Kellam II became the manager of "Benefields," a three thousand acre tract in Pocomoke Hundred, Somerset County, Province of Maryland, owned by Col. Charles Scarborough, brother of Col. Edmund Scarborough. Col. Edmund Scarborough invaded Maryland with the intention of claiming its southern portion for Va., but the scheme failed. The disputed Pocomoke & Annnemessex River areas remained in Maryland. Many Quaker & Presbyterian dissenters settled along the Annemessex in Somerset County. Richard & John Kellam and their families had few dealings with each other, so a dispute may have affected their descendants.[4] Richard Kellam lived to the age of eighty-four, enjoying life on his plantation and dying in 1703 [5]. Before his death, he transferred all his acreage to his children. "A colorful figure, Richard Kellam was an energetic adventurer, just the man for the hardships of colonial settlement. He was instrumental in bringing John Kellam I to Virginia. " [6]
John Kellam II lived in Boguerternorten Hundred, Somerset Co Md., in 1710. [7 & Appendix Calvert Rent Rolls] John Kellam II granted deeds to his two sons William & Thomas Kellam, each to receive one-half of "Wing" if they cared for father in his old age. Unfortunately, the sons died before the father. William Kellam died between 1715 and 1719 evidenced by his wife's name in the 1715 will of her father, James Truitt. Tabitha Truitt Kellam, William Kellam's widow, was named on the Inventory of her husband in April, 1719. William's "next-of-kin" were Adam Spence and John Kellam Sr. The Truitt family were Quakers who had fled to Md. from Northampton Co, Va. [8]
John Kellam II of Somerset Co Md. (c1660- c1719) was presumed by
Woodrow T. Wilson to have been born in Northampton Co VA, son of John Kellam I of
Accomack Co Va. John Kellam II married a daughter of John Kirk, and moved
to Somerset County, according to will dated 1719. He bequeathed to his
heirs over 1000 acres of "Kellam's Choice." John Kellam
II named two sons in his will: William and John Kellam III.
William Kellam's son, John Kellam IV, grandson of John Kellam II, was also named in the
will. [9]
John Kellam II can be found in Maryland quit-rent & debt book records beginning 1666 to 1721. John signed an Address of Loyalty to William of Orange Nov. 28, 1689, strongly anti-Catholic in nature, along with Randal Revell & Thomas Purnell Sr. In 1695, John Kellam II purchased three hundred acres of "Kellam's Choice" lying north of "Benefields" near the headwaters of Pocomoke River formerly owned by a Pokomoke Indian Princess. In 1696, John Kellam and his wife bought six hundred acres of "Wing." Both tracts were in Snow Hill Parish near Snow Hill Landing, now the town of Snow Hill, Worcester Co, Md. [see Kellam Patents in Appendix "Calvert Rent Rolls"]
John Kellam II died between 1719 & 1720 when his will was probated. [ Will in Appendix] He gave John Kellam III "Wing," where he was living in 1719, and 150 acres of "Kellam's Choice." The father wrote a provision "if no other children were born to his son John Kellam III, or if his son died, then the two tracts were to go to Joshua Kellam, son of John Kellam II. This is confirmed by John Kellam III's will of 1739. [Appendix] Also mentioned was deceased William Kellam's son John Kellam, grandson of John II, who received 150 a. of "Kellam's Choice." Constance Kellam remarked: "The deeds of 1710 had apparently been cancelled since John Kellam II still owned "Wing." [10]
John Kellam III, son of John Kellam II, was born abt. 1697 in Somerset Co Md. He died before May 21, 1744, will having been written March 3, 1737. [Appendix ] John Kellam III married Joan Lane, daughter of Walter & Sarah Kirk Lane. No marriage record exists, but evidence indicates John & Joan Kellam were husband & wife. Walter Lane was a Quaker who settled on south side of Pocomoke River. A deed signed by John Kirk, dated March 3, 1707, granted Joan Lane Kellam 100 a. of Dickenson's Folly in Annemessex Hundred, Somerset County. [11] John Kellam III's will written March 2, 1737, probated May 21, 1744, indicated he had been married twice. By his first wife, Joan Kellam, he had eight children: Joshua, Isaac Sr., William I, John IV, Charity Landfort, Anne Hale, Mary & Jemima Kellam. By his second wife, Sarah Purnell Outten, widow of John Outten, he had one daughter, Sarah Kellam. [12 & Appendix "Coventry Parish Records"]
On December 15, 1774, Isaac Kellam
Sr. sold to his son William Kellam II 150 acres of Kellam's
Choice, which "had fallen to me by death of my
brothers William I & Joshua Kellam. [13] Additionally in
1739, John Kellam III willed to sons William
Kellam I and Joshua Kellam tract "Addition"
formerly patented in 1726 by John Kellam for 100 a. in Coulbourne district #6. [14]
On Jan 23, 1750, Joshua Kellam II, son of Joshua Kellam I, with his wife
Elizabeth Kellam, sold to Isaac Kellam Sr. 50 a. of Kellam's
Choice & Addition. [15]
On Jan. 23, 1750, Isaac Kellam Sr., sold 300 a. of Kellam's Choice to Thomas Martin, land lying on n.w. side of Pokomoke River being part of John Kellam II's (the Elder) patent given by his will to his son John Kellam III, (the Younger). John Kellam III by his last will on March 2, 1739, gave to his son Isaac Kellam Sr., this same tract. Isaac Kellam Sr. sold to Thomas Martin a tract which lay below the old road on the s.w. side of James Martin's plantation near land of Elisha Purnell. [16] Isaac Kellam Sr.'s will dated Feb. 7, 1776, was probated July 19, 1780 in Worcester, Co, Md., named sons William Kellam II and Isaac Kellam Jr., and daughters Rachel Caudry, Leah Payne, Charity, Nancy, Molly, Esther & Sarah Kellam. His wife, Jemima Kellam, was named executrix. [see Isaac Kellam Sr.'s Will in Appendix]
On Sept. 28, 1793, William II & Nancy Kellam and James & Betsy Jones gave deed to Shadrack Redden for "West Chester " to settle land owned by three parties. [17] In 1802 & 1804, William II & Nancy Kellam, Ezekiel & Jemimah Kellam give bond to Shadrack Redden for 500 pounds if they do not convey 2 a. of land adjoining Redden land. [18] William Kellam was listed on the 1800 Census for Worcester Co, Md., Pitts Creek Hundred, so he was still living in 1800. [18a]
On April 5, 1806, Nancy Kellam, Jemima Kellam, Isaac and Betsy Kellam, John Payne of Worcester Co Md., and Ezekiel & Polly Kellam of Accomack Co Va., sold to Samuel Merrill three tracts, Westchester, Smithfield & Partnership, totally 116 a., the same amount that Thomas Kellam of Brown Co, Ohio, cited in his Power of Attorney cited below. [19]
Thomas Kellam of
Brown
County, Ohio, father of Elizabeth Kellam, wife of Daniel Dawson,
was named in a deed dated Jan. 10, 1839, in
Worcester Co, Md., as follows:
"I, Thomas
Kellam, Brown Co., Ohio, do appoint William Schoolfield, Worcester Co Md., my
attorney to act on sale of one-seventh of land in Worcester Co, Md., adjoining land of Jarbee Pilcher, Wrixham Payne, & Babel Hill, containing 120 acres
formerly owned by my
father, William Kellam's
seven heirs." [20]
Thomas Kellam was born Dec., 25, 1790, in Worcester Co., Md., son of William Kellam of Kellam's Choice. Thomas married Elizabeth Shinkle July 5, 1814, in Feesburg, Brown Co, Ohio. Thomas died Sept. 18, 1873; date of death is on his tombstone in Eden ME Church Cemetery, Feesburg, Brown Co, Ohio.[21 - photo right] Thomas Kellam's family is mentioned in two Brown County Histories (a) "Centennial of Eden Church" naming Kelllams as early members (b) Biography of William Kellam, son of Thomas Kellam, of Brown Co, Ohio. [22 a & b] Kellum on tombstone is preferred spelling of the Ohio family, while Kellam is used in documents on the Eastern-shore.
Thomas
Kellam was the youngest of a family of seven children. He came to Ohio in his young years with an
older brother, Ezekiel Kellam. He purchased 155 a. of land near Eden
Church in Feesburg. Elizabeth Shinkle,
was the daughter of Philip
Jacob
Shinkle who had come to Ohio about 1803 from Lancaster
Co, Penn. Thomas & Elizabeth
settled on a farm near Eden Church. They began to clear away the dense forest. He &
his wife would reap side by side in the harvest field; they would raise, pull, break, skutch, hackle, spin & weave linen for clothing. Thomas was a Democrat & members
of the Methodist Church in which faith they both died - Elizabeth Shinkle Kellam died Jan
21, 1873; Thomas Kellam died Sept 18, 1873. Their children were Catharine,
Mary, William, Barbara, John, Nancy, Julianne, Peter, Jemimah, Henry & Elizabeth
Kellam. William Kellam, the third eldest child, was b. July 13, 1818 in Lewis
Twp; one among the very early births of the county. He was raised amid pioneer
difficulties and log huts. He devoted his time at home until March 9, 1837, when he
married Mary A. Bolender, daughter of Stephen Bolender. In 1853, William & Mary Kellam
moved from the old Bolender farm to a permanent residence on Taylor's Survey No. 1651.
[22b]
Catherine "Katie" Kellam, daughter of Thomas & Elizabeth Shinkle Kellam, was born February, 1815, in Lewis Twp., Brown Co. Ohio. She married Daniel Dawson, son of Isaac J. & Mary Dawson, on Feb. 9, 1832, in Georgetown, Ohio, at the Brown County Courthouse. Catherine Kellam Dawson died April 13, 1898, and is buried in Pendleton Co., Kentucky. [23]
