Peter and Elizabeth Bellwood Spalding Sr. - Second Generation
Peter Spalding was the fourth son of
Thomas & Catherine Spalding. At the May Court in 1729 gave his age as
35, making his BIRTHDATE 1694. His wife Elizabeth Bellwood was born 1689.
He was not willed land by his father. He bought 175 acres of land called Three
Brothers in St. Mary's Co. in 1739. Peter and his wife Elizabeth
Bellwood Spalding testified in a law suit brought by his niece, Mary Spalding
Carter, against her brother, John Spalding, over possession of a slave. Peter and Edward
Spalding signed the inventory of their brother, John Spalding of Charles Co, Md., as
"next of kin" Nov 1, 1726. The signatures provide proof the two were brothers of
John, and therefore sons of the immigrant, Thomas Spalding.
Peter Spalding died 1740 intestate like his father. Elizabeth Spalding, widow, administered her husband's estate and made final settlement July 21, 1741. Her bondsmen: Samuel Bellwood and William Spalding, son of John Spalding. Peter's property was distributed in 1741 to his wife and children: *Thomas, Peter Jr., James, Michael, Edmund, Mary, Elizabeth, Ann, and Catherine Anderson. Beaverdam Manor was leased by the widow on July 4, 1740, for the maintenance of her younger sons, James, Michael and Edmond. On Dec 25, 1743, another portion of Beaverdam Manor was leased to Elizabeth Spalding for her sons, Edmund & James, and her grandson, Bennett Spalding, who was born the same year, 1743. Elizabeth probably didn't die until after 1761 for in Henry Spalding's Court Case that year, Elizabeth was called as a witness. In 1768, Beaverdam Manor was in possession of Elizabeth Spalding's son, Michael Spalding.
