Robert Clarke, the Surveyor-General, of St. Mary's Co, Md:
Robert Clarke, the "Immigrant " and Surveyor-General of Maryland, was born between 1610 & 1611. His date of birth can be found in two separate sources: (a) Robert Clarke, Immigrant Robert Clerke(sic), in ABH81:117, 17, 74-75. (b) Thomas Copely, Esq. in ABH22:60, 117, 20, 25 (1:folio 115-118). Robert Clarke immigrated in 1637 to Maryland. He gave his age as 27, and was single in 1637. [Liber ABH:403; Ship List Liber 2, f. 425] He immigrated on ship Unity. The first wife of Robert Clarke I, was Eleanor. Eleanor Clarke was transported by John Cockshoot and his wife Jane Hicks. Jane Hicks Cockshoot/Causine later became the third wife of Robert Clarke I.
Children from first marriage of Robert & Eleanor Clarke:
(1) John Clarke b. c1642/4 mar. Ann
(2) Mary Clarke b. c1646.
From second marriage to Winifred Seyborne Greene:
(3) Robert Clarke II, b. Mar. 1652, who married (1) Sarah Combs and (2) Elizabeth Hodgkins. Robert Clarke II owned "Addition" and died in 1725. In will of Robert Clarke II (1652-1725) was listed Ann Osborne.
(4) Thomas Clarke b. Dec. 25, 1654, mar. (1) Ann Barber, d/o Dr. Luke Barber (2) Julian Mudd, d/o Thomas Mudd. Thomas Clarke d. 1711; wife Julian Mudd Clarke mar. (2) Mathew Guibert.
Robert Clarke married (3) Jane Hicks Cockshoot/Causine, but had no issue.
Descent from Robert Clarke (c1610-1664) through marriage of Thomas Spalding to Henrietta Clarke:
Thomas Spalding, the eldest son of Peter & Elizabeth Spalding, was born c1715 in SMCo Md as indicated in the Beaverdam Manor lease of April 1728. Thomas Spaldng married Henrietta Clarke before 1743 because Bennett Spalding, their son, was born in that year. Bennett Spalding's birth shown in Beaverdam Manor lease to Elizabeth Spalding, widow, mother of Thomas Spalding who married Henrietta Clarke.
Henrietta Clarke Spalding was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Mattingly Clarke. Henrietta Clarke had three brothers: (1) Robert Clarke b. c1697 (2) James Clarke b. c1699, d. 1642, married Henrietta Walker (3) John Clarke b. c1701, still living in 1762 when nephew James Clarke, son of his brother James, referred to his Uncle John Clarke, Uncle Thomas Spalding and his cousin Bennett Spalding. She had two sisters: (4) Mary Clarke b. c1703, mar. John Alvey (5) Winifred Clarke b. c1705.
John Clarke II who married Elizabeth Mattingly was the son of John Clarke I ( b. c1642) and his wife Ann.
Elizabeth Mattingly was the daughter of Thomas Mattingly II who made his will in 1714 in SMCo Md.
John Clarke I b. 1642 was the son of Robert Clarke (will dated 1664 SMCo Md.) and his first wife, Eleanor.
