During the Revolutionary War, fifteen Spaldings of St. Mary's County served in Maryland Militia, six served in Continental Line and seventeen signed the "Oath of Allegiance." John Aaron Spalding served in the Maryland Line under General William Smallwood for seven years and participated in major battles from Long Island to Yorktown. In the event the British won the war, any service to the Patriot cause meant forfeiture & confiscation of land & death by hanging as a traitor.
