Thomas and Henrietta Clarke Spalding - Third Generation

Thomas Spalding, the eldest son of Peter & Elizabeth Spalding, was born c1715 in St. Mary's Co as indicated in the Beaverdam manor lease of April, 1728. Thomas married Henrietta Clarke before 1743 because Bennett, their son, was born that year. Bennett's birth is shown in a Beaverdam manor lease to Elizabeth Spalding, widow and mother of Thomas [1]. Henrietta Clarke was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Mattingly Clarke. Henrietta had three brothers and two sisters: Robert Clarke, born c1697; James Clarke b. c1699 (d. 1642 testate, married Henrietta Walker); John Clarke, b. c1701; Mary Clarke b. c1703 (married John Alvey); and Winifred Clarke, b. c1705.

John Clarke II was alive in 1762 when nephew James Clarke, son of his brother James, referred to his Uncle John Clarke, Uncle Thomas Spalding, and his cousin Bennett Spalding In his will. [2]  John Clarke II, who married Elizabeth Mattingly, was the son of John Clarke I (b. c1642) and his wife Ann. Elizabeth Mattingly was the daughter of Thomas Mattingly II who made his will in 1714 in St. Mary's County. John Clarke I was son of Robert Clarke, whose will was dated 1664 in St. Mary's County, and his wife Eleanor. Robert Clarke had been transported to Maryland by Father Copeley in 1637. An Elinor Clarke, transported in 1741 by John Cockshutt, may have been Robert Clarke's wife, possibly a sister to John Hicks or his wife Eleanor Hicks.

On Nov 27, 1746, Richard Fenwick & Thomas Spalding [of Peter] were Sureties for Charles Joy, adm. of estate of Anna Joy, dec'd. Thomas Spalding [of Peter] and Henrietta Spalding were called as witnesses by John B. Spalding recorded in Testamentary Proceedings of Henry Spalding's court case in 1761.

Thomas Spalding died intestate in 1777. Bennett Spalding was bonded as administrator of the estate Feb 17, 1777. Zachariah Forrest & Michael Spalding were Sureties on the bond. [3] Thomas Spalding's inventory, dated Feb 27, 1777, was appraised by Ignatius Fenwick & Cornelius Wildman. Next-of-kin were Henrietta Spalding and Moses Clarke Spalding. On June 1, 1777, Bennett Spalding appeared & took adm. oath. From the above court records, it can be deduced that Thomas Spalding's children were Bennett and Moses Clarke Spalding. [4] Henrietta Spalding listed in 1777 is likely a daughter, although she may have been the widow. Both brothers, Bennett & Moses Clarke, moved from St. Mary's Co to Kentucky around 1800. John Aaron Spalding of Washington Co, Ky, was named as a brother of Bennett Spalding. [5] It may be concluded that Aaron Spalding was another son of Thomas & Henrietta Clarke Spalding.
